COMMUNICATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DECEASED
Consider the case of the “Kakie” communicator mentioned earlier, in which the deceased daughter of the Reverend S. W. Sutton appeared to communicate through Mrs. Piper’s Phinuit control. All the facts received were known to those present, but the facts were presented from the child’s point of view. If the facts were obtained telepathically from the minds of the sitters, then it appears that Mrs. Piper must have obtained parent’s-eye-view information about Kakie from the sitters, and then, with a great deal of dramatic skill, have played back those facts from Kakie’s perspective.
What is even more difficult to explain on the basis of ESP is that at both sittings associations were made that seemed to be in the mind of the child, but not in the minds of the adults. For instance, during the first sitting the Kakie communicator asked at one point for a horse:
Where is horsey? [I gave him a little horse.] Big horsey, not this little one. [Probably refers to a toy cart-horse she used to like.]
And at the second sitting, the same request:
Kakie wants the horse. [I gave him the little horse she played with during her illness.] No, that is not the one. The big horse—so big [Phinuit shows how large]. Eleanor’s horse. Eleanor used to put it in Kakie’s lap. [This horse was packed, in Trenton, and had not occurred to me in connection with Kakie. What she said of it was true.]3
At the first sitting Kakie asked twice for “the little book,” which Mrs. Sutton thought at the time referred to a linen picture book. At the second sitting Kakie, through Phinuit, asked, more specifically, for “the little bit of a book mama read by her bedside, with the pretty bright things hanging from it—mama put it in her hands—the last thing she remembers.”4 Both requests now seemed to refer to a little prayer book with symbols in silver, read to Kakie as she lay dying, and placed in her hands after her death.
Gauld comments on what these passages seem to imply.
If we are to say that Mrs Piper could select from the sitters’ minds associations conflicting with the ones consciously present and utilize them in order to create the impression that the communicator’s thoughts moved along lines distinctively different from the sitter’s, we are beginning to attribute to her not just super-ESP but super-artistry as well.5
There are also cases on record in which the communicator seems to contradict and correct the medium. The American researcher Walter Franklin Prince and his adopted daughter Theodosia visited the medium Mrs. Soule on several occasions, and during one visit Theodosia’s mother appeared to control the medium. At one point it seemed she was trying to remind her daughter of a visit to a neighbor’s farm to see a calf (colloquially a “Bossy”), but was experiencing difficulty.
We went to a neighbor’s to see a pet Bunny—pause—pet Bunny BB Bunny—pause—No, it was a pet Bunny BB Bunny B—long pause—(medium moans) Milk—a small cow Bossy.
